View Full Version : Greece Bans All Video Games

September 3rd, 2002, 06:16 PM
This is probably the dumbest law in the history of mankind. It's even worse than religious laws. I honestly can't think of anything more retarded than this.

Greece has recently banned all forms of computer entertainment. This includes all arcades, consoles, and PC games (even in the home). You'd think this would be difficult to enforce; think again. Apparently there are no longer any arcades in Greece, and people have been fined thousands of dollars for owning Gameboys. If someone is caught playing online chess in a cybercafe, the cafe is closed down.

Just checked that link.

Legislation passed in July banned people from playing video games in public places like internet cafes as part of a drive to stamp out illegal gambling.

The law has been criticised for not making a distinction between interactive gambling and computer games.

It was an anti GAMBLING law. The idea was that people wuold not use internet gambling. (You know those popups for online casinos are EVERYWHERE.)

The funniest thing is that the whole thing started back in February 2002 when it came to public attention that a member of the Parliament who is also a member of the leading party PASOK, Mr. Hrisanthakopoulos, was caught by a TV camera playing on illegal electronic gambling machines. After this his party over reacted to this and banned all gaming and gambling.

With laws like this you wonder how they obtained internet access in the first place.

Whoopdee-****ing-Doo...So some idiot politician committed the "crime" of spending money in a way that offended people whose business it wasn't. Did anyone get hurt? Hell no, because morals don't have feelings.
