I'm curious to know if the Illinois Law that states "The English langauge is not to be spoken" is a legitamate law or not. So if anyone knows or has some insite as to where I may find the exact law It would be most appreciated.:) :) :) :) :)

I guess if you call the police or 911 you would have to be arrested, of course when the polic read you your rights they would have arrest themselves.
This would be a good way to lock up all the lawyers though.

Strange stuff.
I knew a teacher who was from Chicago during my last year at school and I asked him about this law. He thought it was a old French colonial law (which would make sense) but I discovered totally by accident on some website that the state of Illinois doesn't recognise English as a language - only 'American'.
So if I want to go to Chicago for my hols, I'd better start working on that accent and ask for 'gas' rather than 'petrol':)

Actually, what is the whole point of that 'Learn To Speak Standard American English' site? I can't think of any situation where it would be particularly useful, except perhaps in acting.

Well, it could come quite in handy if you want to be understood in Culpeper, Virginia.

..or if you want to spend that extra $500 you have in your checking account and become an INSTRUCTOR!!
Survival Rule Number One [for you non-American visitors to the States]-- For every person with a $50 bill, there are three people lined up to somehow take it away from him.
At first I thought, "What satire!"
Now I'm thinking, "What a scam!" :p
:lol :lol :clap

"Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly: The official language of the State of Illinois shall be known hereafter as the 'American' language and not as the "English" language."
Enacted in 1923, repealed in 1969.
