I don't think so. Every country has it's pros and contras. you just have to live with it.

Sorry for the edit but I didn't much like the original and don't care to see it repeated

I must state that I find it utterly rediculous though you are wrong on some american laws. Under 18 year olds most often can have sex, it is just that they cannot have sex with people over 18. Think about this as a man, if i lived in the states, I could be drafted into the army and could die for my country at 18 but I couldn't drink a beer (unless my family gave it to me, at least in several states), or drink champagne at my own wedding.

Unless you were married in a bar you could get falling down drunk if you wanted. The draft doesn't exist anymore not for over 20 years. During the draft most not all states were 18.... It was raised back to 21 because of all the teen deaths on the highway...

Is that the only reason for the drinking limit to be 21? So stomp out DUI, but treat 18s as adults...

This might be another "dumb law" in your vision, but in the Netherlands it's legal to have sex with adults at the minimum age of 16.

16 is also the age to buy beer legally, but you must be 18 for any other alcoholic drink. (By the way: I NEVER heard of a law that forbids us to buy beer on sunday. As far as I know this law doesn't excist at all.)

All countrys are different and have different reasons for certain laws. If you don't like a certain law in a certain country don't complain about it, just don't go there!

Concerning DUIs, I recently volunteered at Habitat for Humanity and there were a small bunch of people there doing community service for DUIs. They weren't teenagers....the youngest was age 30.

Precisely-either treat them as adults, or raise the age of majority...

I think I have the origins for the 21 drinking age. DUI used to be a very serious problem in this country. In fact, my father who grew up in the suburbs of Milwaukee told me that in the late '60's "drunk driving wasn't a crime, it was transportation."

Somewhere around the early 80's, people began to notice the rising body count, and MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) was formed. An emotional appeal was made to Congress to get states to toughen their DUI laws, and one of the "solutions" was to force states to raise the drinking age to 21 or lose federal highway funds. In spite of the unconstitutianality of this edict, most states complied immediatly, having found a politically unpopular group to blame for a serious problem. (A case in point is the South Side of Milwaukee's representative in the US House of Representatives-he is a THREE TIME convicted drunk driver.)

In short, the drinking age is America playing its favorite game-The Blame Game.

Most "dumb laws" are old laws that aren't in practice anymore but are on the books. I'm no lawyer but such laws don't hold up in court however are funny since they still technically are on the books. I assume its like that in some other countries as well.

As for rapier's post. I totally agree I think in the US that the drinking age should be 18. As for the driving age being so young as compared in some other countries you have to understand that the US is more dependent on automobile transportation then other countries.
