Did his political rivals in the Dutch government refuse to give him adequate protection? That's the implication from the damning official report into Pim Fortuyn's assassination at the hands of a far left fanatic.

Or maybe I am missing something.I am sure Phreak will straiten me out.

I have heard several conspiracy theories, from the extreme right angle and from the extreme left angle. The most funny conspiracy theory I heard so far was from lefties. The murder of Pim Fortuyn was indeed carried out by Volkert van der Graaf, but he had been brainwashed, and in fact worked for CIA, the White House, the Dutch government, the Dutch secret service, the Dutch royal family, etcetera, they say. It was the reactionaries who killed him, in order to blame it on the left. They deny his confession to the police, and give an interview with a journalist as proof of their theory, even though, as far as I know, he is not allowed to contact the press.

I've searched a few analyses of the report on the protection of Pim Fortuyn in English on the Internet. I have found reports from Radio Netherlands (http://www.rnw.nl/hotspots/html/ned021217.html), the Sydney Morning Herald (http://www.smh.com.au/text/articles/2002/12/18/1040174296590.htm), the Washington Times (http://www.washtimes.com/upi-breaking/20021217-044107-4459r.htm), the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune (http://24hour.startribune.com/24hour/world/story/679560p-5059823c.html), the Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,3604,861816,00.html) and Newsday.com (http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/wire/sns-ap-netherlands-slain-politician1218dec17,0,4869186.story?coll=sns-ap-nationworld-headlines). A summary of the report can be found on the homepage of the Dutch Home Secretary (http://www.minbzk.nl/asp/get.asp?xdl=../views/bzk/xdl/Page&ItmIdt=00014693&PosIdt=00014693&SitIdt=00000022&VarIdt=00000001&date=20021120&ordening=datum).

LOL

I can tell you: it'd be very difficult to prove when you say the government did nothing to protect Pim Fortuyn. The Dutch secret service performed phone taps on several ecoterrorists they suspected of plotting to kill Fortuyn. In order to perform phone taps, the secret service needs explicit written signatures/autographs (in other words: permission) from the Secretary of General Affairs (i.e. the Prime Minister), the Attorney General, the Home Secretary (who is in charge of the secret service) and the Secretary of Traffic, Transportation and Water (who is responsible for telecommunications). If all these people authorized secret service action in order to protect his life, you can't say they let them get killed.

I think it was the leader of Leefbaar Rotterdam, the local party Pim Fortuyn brought to power in March, who said that Pim Fortuyn got 52 threatening e-mails a day for months in a row. For any secret service it is impossible to analyze so many threats in so short a time. The threats they did analyze mostly came from either drunk people or psychiatric patients.
