Remember that episode of Frasier where Niles went for a long drive 'cos he was feeling depressed about Daphne? He said to Frasier that he had to turn back at the Oregon border because he had fruit with him in the car. Is this law true, or did the writers make it up? Because if it is true it should definitely be on DL...

There are certain areas of the Northwest that have an apple maggot quarentine. Not enforced, but appreciated if people cooperated. Seems Niles was cooperating. There are signs that tell you when you are entering/leaving quarentine areas but it's not like the troopers are pulling people over to check fruit! Fruit is big up here, it feeds our great wineries!

Same with California... There are "agricultural Inspection Stations on all the major highways coming into California. If you have any produce or fruit, they will either take it from you or make you eat it on the spot! ...or I suppose you could turn around, but since these inspection stations are within California's borders, you've already committed the crime.

Ag inspection is basically unenforced except when entering the US. However, it's not a dumb law. The medfly has cost California billions. It's an immigrant that slipped through.
Entering the country we've had our luggage searched more than once (her folks live in a foot-and-mouth area, the inspectors are actually more interested in meat than fruit.) and I've seen the inspectors throw away a lot of stuff belonging to people who tried to sneak stuff in.
