You really should watch it. In the US, it will be aired by CBS and Outdoor Life Network. You have no idea what you've been missing for all these years. The Tashkent Terror (Djamolodine Abdujaparov). Poncia (Ugo Agostini). The Cannibal (Eddie Merckx). Monsieur Chrono (Jacques Anquetil). The Eagle of Toledo (Federico Bahamontes). El Rey (Miguel Indurain). Der Jan (Jan Ullrich). The Badger (Bernard Hinault). The Pirate. Elefantino (both Marco Pantani). Rik I (Rik van Steenbergen). Rik II (Rik van Looy). Rik III (Rik Verbrugghe). Le Roi des Tombeurs (the recently deceased Wim van Est). The Lion of Flanders (Johan Museeuw). The Pink Panther (Alex Zülle). Supermario (Mario Cipollini). The Squirrel (Stefano Garzelli). The Flying Angel (Charly Gaul). The Crab (Fernando Escartin). Le Professeur (Jan Jansen). The Camel (Tony Rominger). #2 (Joop Zoetemelk). Just to name a few people. And ofcourse I can't forget the races. The Tour de France. The Giro d'Italia. The Vuelta a España. The Tour de Suisse. The Tour of Flanders. The Fleche Wallone. Liege-Bastogne-Liege. Paris-Roubaix. Paris-Nice. Paris-Tours. Paris-Brussels. Milan - San Remo. Giro di Lombardia. Dauphiné Liberé. Volta a Catalunya. The Catalan Week.
On a less happy note: so far, 20 cyclists have died during a race or of injuries sustained during a race. They are:
1935 - Armando Cepeda plummeted into a valley near Bourg-d'Oisans, France, during the Tour de France;
1937 - Frencham André Raynaud, at the same time world champion cross country skiing, died during a race in Antwerp, Belgium;
1950 - Frenchman Camille Danguillaume was hit by a motorcycle during the French national championships in Montlhéry. He died of his injuries;
1951 - Serse Coppi, brother of cycling legend Fausto Coppi, fell during the final kilometer of the final stage of the Giro del Piemonte. He finished the stage, but died in hospital the next night;
1956 - Reigning world champion Stan Ockers died during a track race in Antwerp;
1967 - British cyclist Tom Simpson died of a heart attack during the climb of the Mont Ventoux during the 13th stage of the Tour de France, on July 13th. A combination of alcohol, Stenamina, Tonedrin and amphetamine, in combination with extreme physical exertion during extreme weather circumstances caused Simpson's death. During his brief career, Simpson had won several major races, such as the 1965 World Road Race Championship, the 1961 Tour of Flanders, Milano - San Remo (1964), the 1965 Giro di Lombardia, Paris - Nice (1967) and Bordeaux-Paris (1963). Simpson was the first Briton to wear the maillot jaune (jellow jersey) in the Tour de France (1962). He lived to be 29 years old. He was buried in Harworth Cemetery, North Nottinghamshire, England;
1969 - During a criterium in Zingem, Belgium, Frenchman Jose Samyn hit a man who was selling guides of that criterium. He died of his injuries;
1971: Reigning World Champion Jean-Pierre Monséré of Belgium was ran over and killed by an oncoming vehicle during the Grand Prix de Rétié on March 15th;
1972 - Manuel Galera of Spain died as a result of an accident during the Giro de Andalucía;
1976 - Spaniard Juan Manuel Santisteban fell fatally during the first stage of the Giro d'Italia.
1984 - Portuguese rider Joaquim Agostinho, 5 times national champion, fell to the ground and fractured his skull when he hit a dog that was crossing the road during the Volta ao Algarve. He completed the stage, but was taken to hospital out of precaution. He died in hospital 11 days later. Ironically, he shouldn't even have been riding that year. Officially he had retired at the end of 1983, but he was tempted back by the chance to lead an all-Portuguese team through the major stage races. Agostinho competed in 14 Tours de France from 1969 to 1983, finishing third in 1978 and 1979 and winning four stages during his long career. He finished the Tour de France a record 11 times;
1986 - Italian Emilio Ravasio fell during the first stage of the Giro d'Italia. He died in hospital 2 weeks later;
1987 - Spaniard Vicente Mata was hit and killed by a car during the Trofeo Luis Puig;
1987 - Belgian Michel Goffin had a severe accident in the Tour du Haut-Var. He slipped into a coma and died in hospital six weeks later;
1988 - Dutch female cyclist Connie Meijer died from a heart attack during a criterium in The Netherlands;
1995 - Reigning Olympic champion Fabio Casartelli, of Lance Armstrong's Motorola team, fell and smashed his head on a granite block on the road during the descent of the Portet d'Aspet on July 18th during the Tour de France. He died in hospital several hours later;
1999 - Manuel "Perolo" Sanroma, 22 years old and one of the talents of Spanish cycling, fell to the ground during the final kilometer of the second stage of the Volta a Catalunya. He fell down at between 40 and 50 mph and smashed his head on the curbstone/curbside. On his way to the hospital he died of his injuries;
2000 - Nicole Reinhart, a two-time U.S. National Track bicycle racing champion, went off the road and struck a tree during the BMC Tour of Arlington, Massachusetts, the final event of the 17-race Saturn Professional Tour, which Reinhart was leading. She died in hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts;
2003 - A mechanical problem of one cyclist during the Paris-Nice race caused a congestion among the pack. Andrei Kivilev of Kazakhstan (32nd in the 2000 Tour de France, 4th in the 2001 Tour de France and 21st in the 2002 Tour de France) noticed the congestion too late and was thrown of his bike. He hit the asphalt face first. Sixteen hours later, he died of brain haemorrhage and skull fracture.

I was spending my Easter in Spain and when we were walkin about "Tol-leh-thdo" i was told, that the Spanish dude used to cycle up this hill in Toledo for his training. And this hill was no hill, it was Mt. Egonormous!
I have great respect for all those guys who do the Tour of France. I know the name of the comp makes it sound like a teddy bears' picnic but some of those huge things they have to climb...

You mean Federico Bahamontes, the Eagle of Toledo?
some of those huge things they have to climb...
I climbed some of them on holiday. Highest was a 'hill' near Millau, of about 1200 meters (4000 ft.). For a Dutchman that's quite a climb, I can tell you that. It took me about 45 minutes to get to the top, it took me about 5 minutes to get back down again.
Some contests in Latin America go as high as 4000 meters (over 12000 ft.).

The Tour will start in Paris on Saturday, July 5th, and it will finish in Paris on Sunday, July 27th. The cyclists will ride 21 stages, with resting days on July 16th and July 22nd. The Tour will leave France during only 1 stage this year. During the 14th stage, from Saint-Girons to Loudenvielle-le-Louron, the cyclists will go through Spain for about 15 to 20 kms. Three finishes are up-hill, on L'Alpe d'Huez, Ax 3 Domaines-Bonascre and Luz-Ardiden. Of the 52 hills and mountains the cyclists have to climb, five are of the extreme category (hors catégorie): Galibier (2,645 meters or 8,678 feet), Alpe d'Huez (1,850 meters or 6,069 feet), Izoard (2,360 meters or 7,743 ft.), Tourmalet (2,114 meters or 6,936 ft.) and Luz-Ardiden (1,715 meters or 5,626 ft.).
The total length of this Tour de France is 3,361 kms or 2,088 miles and 2,263 feet. The time trials cover a total length of 172 kilometers or 106 miles and 4,625 feet. Estimates are that 15 million spectators will be standing along the road, with a multitude watching the Tour on television.
Stage winners will get 7,620 euros or about $8,797. Cyclists who end up below the 120th place in the final ranking will get 381 euros or $439.865. The winner of this year's Tour will get 400,000 euros or $461,800. The winner will share this money with his teammates. The total amount of prize money in this year's Tour is 2,877,705 euros or $3,322,310.
The race is run with 22 teams of nine riders, giving a total of 198 competitors. Of the 9 cyclists in a team, one is named the leader. Each team will have numbers from *1 to *9. The leader of the team will get the *1 number (Lance Armstrong, as last year's winner, will get number 1, Spaniard Joseba Beloki of O.N.C.E., the winner of last year team ranking, will get number 11, etc.). The other numbers of the teams (*2 to *9) are generally handed out in alphabetical order. Team US Postal has decided to give the number 2 to Armstrong's domestique Roberto Heras.

The 2003 Tour de France regulations
Article 1 - Participation
The race is run with 22 teams of nine riders, giving a total of 198 competitors.
Article 2 - Riders' identification
Riders must affix the number plates to the front of their bicycle frames and wear two riders' numbers (small format) exactly over their hips, one on the right and one on the left side.
Article 4 - Technical assistance
All riders may render one another such minor services as lending or exchanging food, drinks, spanners or accessories. The lending or exchange of tubular tires, wheels or bicycles is, however, permitted only among riders from the same team.
Article 6 - Feeding
In general, feeding is permitted at any time starting from the 50th km distance marker up to the distance marker indicating "end of feeding" (20 km from the finish).
Article 7 - Infraction en course
Breaches of the regulations during the race
Slipstreaming behind a motor vehicle, pushing, handflinging, pulling and holding on are strictly forbidden.
Article 8 - Riders withdrawing from the race
Any rider withdrawing from the race must hand in his race number to a commissaire riding in the sag wagon.
Article 9 - Obligations of the teams
Riders and team managers must abide by the discipline and rules dictated by both the principle of equal treatment and the reputation of the Tour de France as a sporting event.
Article 10 - Leaders' jerseys
Leaders in the general time, points, best climber and youth general time classifications must wear:
- in the first case, the "yellow jersey";
- in the second case, the "green jersey";
- in the third case, the "red polka dot jersey";
- in the fourth case, the "white jersey".
Leaders' jerseys will be worn in the following order: first the yellow jersey, then the green jersey, followed by the red polka dot and white jerseys. If a rider is leading in more than one general classification, he will, of course, wear only one jersey in compliance with this order of priority. The riders occupying the 2nd, 3rd or 4th positions in the corresponding classification standings will then wear the other jerseys.
Article 14 - Timing
All riders finishing in the same bunch are awarded the same time.
Article 15 - Medical care
Medical care during the race is provided exclusively by the official medical staff, from the time riders enter the checking area at the start of the race, until they leave it at the finish of the race.
Article 17 - Start of stages
For all road racing stages, riders and their team managers must be present at the signature checkpoint at least ten minutes before it closes. After the riders have been called by the race managers, the actual start may take any one of three forms:
- Standing: from the signature checkpoint where the route allows it;
- Diferred standing: if the start point chosen by the organizers is rather far away from the signature checkpoint;
- Flying: if the place chosen by the race organizers is not very far from the signature checkpoint, at the "0 km point".
Article 18 - Course route
Riders must always follow the official course route. The use by riders of any other route, particularly shortcuts, incurs a penalty.
Article 19 - Railroad crossing
It is forbidden for riders to cross railroad crossings when the barrier is down. Any riders not complying with this requirement are disqualified from the race by the commissaires.
Article 20 - Stage finishes
General provisions
The finish of each stage is marked by a "red flag", surmounted by a banner, situated 1 km from the finish line. If the finish banner is missing, an official waves a black and white checkered flag to indicate the finish line.
In case of a duly recognized crash, flat or mechanical problem after the red flag marker the rider(s) are credited with the same time as the riders accompanying them when the incident occurred.
Their placings are determined by the order in which they cross the finish line. If, due to a crash, a rider cannot cross the finish line, he will be classified at the last place of the stage classification.
Exceptional cases are settled by the commissaires' panel and are not open to appeal.
This measure does not apply to all the stages
Article 22 - Finishing deadlines
Depending on the type of stage and the difficulties involved, finishing deadlines are calculated based coefficients….
Article 23 - Individual time trial stages
In the individual time trial stages, the starting order is as follows:
- in Paris: at 1 minute intervals; riders start in the order set by race organizers and team managers.
- in Gaillac: at 2 minutes intervals. Riders start in the reverse order of the general classification following stage 11.
- In Pornic, at 2 minutes intervals, and then at 3' intervals for the last riders to start. Riders start in the reverse order of the general classification following stage 18.
A rider caught by another may neither lead nor follow in the latter's slipstream.
A rider must leave a gap of at least 2 meters between himself and any rider he passes. A rider caught by another rider will stay at least 25 meters behind the latter.
Any help between riders is forbidden.
Each rider may be accompanied by a vehicle carrying spares. A following vehicle must remain about 10 m behind its rider; it may never draw level with him and all information must be communicated from behind. A following vehicle may take up position between two riders only if they are at least 50 m apart. If this gap closes, the vehicle accompanying the first rider must immediately drop back behind the second one.
Article 24 - Team time trial stages
In team time trial stages, teams start at 5 minutes intervals in the reverse order of the general team classification following stage 3.
The team classification of the stage is based on the time recorded by the rider who finishes in 5th position (with a precision of 1/100 of a second). An identical time is granted to all the team members who record this time or a lower time.
For the individual general classification, the times are recorded as follows:
- the time of the 5th rider in each team for riders who qualify for this as stipulated above;
- the actual times of laggards with a maximum limit of 7 minutes relative to the first team's "scratch" time.
The lag of teams that finish more than 7 minutes after the first team (the "scratch" time) is limited to 7 minutes in the individual general classification. However, riders who finish later than the time limits set by the regulations (coefficient 6) are eliminated.
Article 25 - Classifications
GENERAL INDIVIDUAL TIME CLASSIFICATION
The general individual time classification is determined by adding the times of each rider in the 21 stages, taking into account time bonuses and penalties.
GENERAL INDIVIDUAL POINTS CLASSIFICATION
The general individual points classification will be determined by adding the points obtained in the prologue and the individual stage classification, in accordance with the following scales and taking into account time penalties:
BEST CLIMBER CLASSIFICATION
The best climber classification is determined by adding the points won in all mountain and hill climbs,…
YOUNG RIDERS CLASSIFICATION
The young riders classification is open only to riders born after January 1st 1977.
GENERAL TEAM CLASSIFICATION
The general team classification is determined by adding each team's best three individual times for the prologue and every stage.
In the event of a tie in the general classification, the order of teams is determined based on the number of stage wins by team, then their number of second places, and so on until a number of places obtained by one of them enables them to be finally placed.
A team reduced to fewer than 3 riders is eliminated from the general team classification.
MOST AGGRESSIVE RIDER CLASSIFICATION
This prize is awarded to the rider who displays the most effort and sportsmanship. The recipient of the most aggressive rider is decided on during the road racing stages by a panel chaired by the race manager.
The general classification is determined by adding the points given by all members of the panel in each one of the road racing stages.
In the event of a tie in the final general classification, the order is determined based on riders' placings in the general individual time classification.
Competitors must finish the Tour de France in order to be placed in the most aggressive rider classification.
Article 29 - Dismissal
Where it is deemed that the image or reputation of the Tour de France may be blemished, notably with regard to anti-doping laws, to the behavior of any member of a trade team, the organizer reserves the right at any time during the race to exclude the rider(s) or the team member(s) involved from the race.
Article 31
The present regulations were originally written in the French language. In the case of any misinterpretations the French language version will be the reference.

A severe crash in the last kilometer of the stage, when the cyclists were racing at speeds of up to 70 km/h (well over 40 mph), injured several racers. Team Rabobank had four cyclists involved in the crash: Levi Leipheimer (USA), Grischa Niermann (Germany) and Marc Lotz and Bram de Groot (The Netherlands). Leipheimer (broken ischial bone) and Lotz (broken jaw bone and eye socket, torn upper lip and tear tube) were forced to retire from the Tour. Niermann and De Groot sustained cuts and bruises. French sprinter Jimmy Casper (FDJeux.com) landed heavily on his head. He was concussed and got a brace around his neck but will continue in the Tour. One of the favourites for the over-all victory, American Tyler Hamilton (Team CSC) broke his right collar bone in the crash, but he will continue. In the 2002 Giro d'Italia, Hamilton broke his collar bone as well. He carried on and ended as runner-up in the over-all ranking. Italian sprinter Fabio Baldato (Alessio) received treatment on both of his knees and on his right hand. Spaniard Luis Perez (Cofidis) injured his left knee. Frenchman Franck Rénier (Brioches - La Boulangère) injured his lower left arm. Lance Armstrong bruised his right thigh and scratched his left shoulder. George Hincapie suffered cuts on his left knee, while Viatcheslav Ekimov suffered scratches. Another racer involved in the crash was Australian Bradley McGee, then in the yellow jersey. He eventually crossed the finish line in 69th position. Others involved in the crash were Telekom's Andreas Klöden (broken sacrum) and Fassa Bortolo's Nicola Loda (Italy).
The crash occurred when Jose Enrique Gutierrez (Kelme) hit the rear wheel of Médéric Clain (Cofidis), pulled his right foot from his pedal and lost control of his bike. He fell down and hit the street. He dragged approximately 35 others with him in his fall. The incident occurred in the front of the pack, which meant that about 100 racers had to come to a complete stop and had to wait until the problems in front of them had dissolved.
Because the incident occurred in the final kilometer, all racers involved were awarded the same time as the winner. The six racers after the pack had to let go off the pack before the final kilometer. Their time was therefore the actual difference between them and the winner.

I can't find any records of the red number either, but didn't Flickinger ride with it yesterday on stage 2?
By the way, how come I'm the only one believing that Armstrong isn't going to win this year?

The red number goes to the most aggressive rider (in the positive sense, not the one who smacks the opponents in the face the most times) of the previous stage. The most aggressive riders were:
Stage 1: Andy Flickinger (France)
Stage 2: Frédéric Finot (France)
Stage 3: Anthony Geslin (France)
Stage 5: Frédéric Finot (France)
Stage 6: Stuart O'Grady (Australia)
Stage 7: Richard Virenque (France)
Stage 8: Nicolas Portal (France)
Stage 9: Jörg Jaksche (Germany)
Stage 10: José Enrique Gutiérrez (Spain)
Stage 11: Juan Antonio Flecha (Spain)
Stage 13: Carlos Sastre (Spain)
Stage 14: Laurent Dufaux (Switzerland)
Stage 15: Sylvain Chavanel (France)
Stage 16: Tyler Hamilton (USA)
Stage 17: Servais Knaven (The Netherlands)
Stage 18: Andy Flickinger (France)
Stage 20: Bram de Groot (The Netherlands)

During the 12th stage of the Tour de France, an individual time trial over 47 kilometers of 29.2 miles from Gaillac to Cap Découverte, four riders were caught slipstreaming. For two riders, the penalty time they got for slipstreaming meant the end of their Tour de France.
The time of stage winner Jan Ullrich (58 minutes and 32 seconds) in the 47 kms or 29.2 miles individual time trial from Gaillac to to Cap Découverte meant that the time limit was at 1 hour, 13 minutes and 12 seconds, 25% over the time of the winner.
David Etxebarria of Spain and Unai Etxebarria of Venezuela, both of the Basque Euskaltel - Euskadi team, were caught slipstreaming behind the car of the directeur sportif, the team manager, of team Euskaltel - Euskadi. David Etxebarria finished last in the stage, with a time of 1 hour, 12 minutes and 54 seconds. This time meant that he had just managed to stay within the time limit. However, the race judges had caught him slipstreaming behind a car at a speed of about 41 km/h or 25.48 mph. They added 2 minutes and five seconds to his time. This meant that David Etxebarria officially got a time of 1 hours, 14 minutes and 59 seconds, which made him exceed the time limit by just over a minute and a half.
Etxebarria's teammate Unai Etxebarria was caught slipstreaming behind a car for more than 8 miles. During this period, the car drove at a speed of around 43 km/h or 26.72 mph. The race judges added 5 minutes and 51 seconds to his time, which changed his time from 1 hour, 8 minutes and 58 seconds, which was well under the time limit, to 1 hour, 14 minutes and 49 seconds, a minute and a half over the time limit.
Dutchman Michael Boogerd was caught slipstreaming behind fellow racer Didier Rous, who raced along at an average speed of around 43 km/h or 26.72 mph. Boogerd got 2 minutes and 25 seconds penalty time. As a result, he dropped from 68th place to 141st place in the classification of stage 12, and from 24th place to 30th place in the general classification.
The biggest sinner was Austrian Gerrit Glomser of team Saeco. He was caught slipstreaming behind a car for more than 8 miles. This gave him 6 minutes and 43 seconds penalty time. The penalty time made him drop from 42nd place to the 165th and last place in the classification of stage 12, and from 64th place to 74th place in the general classification.

Lauri Aus 1970 - 2003
The Estonian cyclist Lauri Aus has died today after a road accident. The 33-year old, who raced for the French team AG2R Prévoyance, was hit from behind by a drunk driver. The driver was later found to have had 2.5 promilles of alcohol in his blood. The accident occurred when Aus was training for the national mountainbike championships of Estonia. Aus died in the ambulance on the way to hospital.
As an amateur, Aus came in 5th in the road race at the 1992 Olympic Games of Barcelona. That race was won by Fabio Casartelli, who died after a crash in the 1995 Tour de France. Aus made his professional debut in 1995, for the small French team of Mutualité de Seine-Marne. In 1996, he won two stages in both the Ruban Granitier Breton race and the Tour de Poitou-Charentes.
In 1997, Aus switched to another French team, Casino - AG2R Prévoyance. For that team, Aus won the Tour du Limousin, the Tour de Poitou-Charentes, the Clasica Haribo and the Grand Prix Isbergues. Aus won stages in the Tour of Poland, the Tour de L'Oise, the Tour de Poitou-Charentes and the Tour du Limousin. Aus became 7th in the 1997 World Championships, which were held in San Sebastian, Spain.
In 2000, Casino stopped its sponsorship of the team. The team continued as AG2R Prévoyance. Aus continued his career at this team. In 2000, Aus became Estonian national champion in the road race and the time trial. In 2001, Aus won a stage in the Tour de Poitou-Charentes. Aus finished the 1997 Tour de France as 124th in the general classification. This year Aus wasn't selected for the Tour de France due to an injury.
The Tour de France will observe one minute of silence prior to the 15th stage. The riders of AG2R Prévoyance will ride in front of the pack for the first part of the stage, in tribute to their deceased teammate. The stage will be neutralized during that part. There will be no racing for the first part of the stage.

The 2003 Tour de France has broken several records:
Lance Armstrong equalled Miguel Indurain's record of five consecutive victories. Lance Armstrong is also the oldest to win the Tour five times. He was 11,635 days old at his 5th victory. When Miguel Indurain won his fifth Tour title, in 1995, he was 11,329 old, 306 days younger than Armstrong.
Lance Armstrong has now become part of the 'Five of Five,' the group of cyclists with 5 Tour de France victories. The group consists of the late Jacques Anquetil of France (1957, 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1964), Belgian legend Eddie Merckx (1969, 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1974), Frenchman Bernard Hinault (1978, 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1985), Spaniard Miguel Indurain (1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995) and American Lance Armstrong (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003).
The average speed of Lance Armstrong this year was 40.956 km/h or 25.45 mph, the highest average speed in the history of the Tour de France. Lance Armstrong broke his own average speed record of 1999, which was at 40.276 km/h or 25.03 mph.
The green jersey went to Baden Cooke of Australia. He beat his compatriot Robbie McEwen in the final sprint, which took the green jersey out of the hands of McEwen. The difference between the two at the end was two points, the smallest difference in the history of the Tour.
The polka-dotted jersey for best climber went to Richard Virenque, for a record-equalling sixth time. Virenque previously won the polka-dotted jersey in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1999. The other record holders are Spanish legend Federico Bahamontes (1954, 1958, 1959, 1962, 1963 and 1964) and Belgian Lucien van Impe (1971, 1972, 1975, 1977, 1981, 1983).

Despite winning the Tour de France for a record equalling fifth time, Lance Armstrong has dropped from 5th to 8th place in the UCI world ranking. Runner-up Jan Ullrich made the biggest leap on the ranking. He jumped from 159th to 26th place. Aleksandr Vinokourov, 3rd in the Tour, jumped from 13th to 6th place. Thanks to a 4th place in the Tour, American Hamilton jumped from 18th to 10th place, while number 5 of the Tour, Basque rider Haimar Zubeldia Agirre, jumped from 102nd to 32nd place. Iban Mayo Diez, 6th in the Tour, jumped from 11th to 5th. Ivan Basso, 7th in the final ranking of the Tour de France, jumped from 46th to 35th and Christophe Moreau, 8th in the Tour, jumped from 59th to 31st. Carlos Sastre jumped from 90th to 78th place, while Francisco Mancebo dropped from 17th to 18th. Baden Cooke, the winner of the Green Jersey in the Tour de France, jumped from 25th to 16th. Denis Menchov, the winner of the White Jersey for best young rider, jumped from 261st to 176th place. Richard Virenque, who won the Polka-dotted Jersey for a record-equalling sixth time, jumped from 61st to 43rd place. Joseba Beloki, who was runner-up in the 2002 Tour de France and who was seen as Armstrong's main challenger until his retirement after a severe crash on a descent, dropped from 8th to 27th place. Despite his retirement from professional cycling, Laurent Jalabert still is 60th on the world ranking. Last on the world ranking, on a shared 2023rd place, are Britons Neil Coleman (22, of Team EnduraSport.com - Principia) and Rowen Horner (29, teamless), both with .5 points. Both dropped from 1939th position on the ranking. Fassa Bortolo maintained its lead in the Trade Team 1 ranking, the "league" of the 30 best teams. Dutch team Bankgiroloterij maintained its lead in the Trade Team 2 ranking, ahead of Paternina - Costa de Almeria and De Nardi - Colpack. Polish team Action Nvidia Mroz took over the lead in the Trade Team 3 ranking from American team Saturn, with Slovenian team Perutnina Ptuj maintaining its third position. There were no changes in the top 10 of the Nations ranking, where Italy maintained its lead, ahead of Spain (2nd place), Germany (3rd), France, Australia, Switzerland, USA, Belgium, The Netherlands and Denmark. Aleksandr Vinokourov's 3rd place in the Tour de France made Kazakhstan jump from 19th to 13th place.

With good cause in my opinion, I just watched an hour long bio on him. He is awsome! To rise to a level "so high" from the absolute "bottom" just takes my breath away.
Add to this his total lack of self superiority. He is always available for any charity event. He hasn't the "big head". He is most comfortable around us average guys and gals.
Lance Armstrong - Joe Montana - Bob St Clair - my sports idol list is very short. :cool

I think Armstrong will announce his retirement from cycling this winter.

Javier Pascual Llorente tested positive for EPO
Spanish cyclist Javier Pascual Llorente of team Kelme has been named as the rider who failed a drugs test at the Tour de France.
Llorente was told on Monday that his B sample had confirmed a positive test for the banned substance erythropoietin (EPO), which stimulates red blood cell formation. The Kelme rider faces a ban of up to two years but insists he is innocent of any wrongdoing and says he believes the way the test was conducted is to blame. "I am completely calm about it but I don't have any confidence in what the French are doing. Clearly there's persecution going on against Spanish cycling. I talked with doctor Walter Viru and he told me we'd never used the product in question, that everything was within the rules."
Llorente returned the positive sample after the 12th stage, a 47km time-trial which was won by Tour runner-up Jan Ullrich.
The Spanish Royal Cycling Federation (RFEC) will now take up Llorente's case and could ban him for between one and two years if it finds him guilty.
Llorente said: "It's a big coincidence that it's always the Spaniards who are caught - there's something fishy going on. It was the same with Francisco Pérez Sanchez and Aitor Kintana Zarate, who were unjustly punished." Francisco Pérez Sanchez was tested positive for EPO in this year's Tour of Romandy, while Aitor Kintana Zarate was tested positive in this year's Tour of Catalonia.
In 1999, Pascual Llorente won the Ruta del Sol stage race in southern Spain. This season, the 32-year-old beat Lance Armstrong to take the Tour of Murcia during the final time trial. He also won the Ruta Del Sol again.
