View Full Version : Misconception on some singapore laws

I was surfing for some funny stuff to read and you guys have a lot of cool stuff. Didn't know I would defend my countrybut anyway just wondering why some of these laws you stated about singapore are considered as dumb? Anyway just to clear up some misconceptions. :wink

1.It is illegal to pee in an elevator.

eh you mean its legal to pee in an elevator where you're at? Eh I mean why would it be legal to pee in an elevator? Do they have a law in your country where a similar act is like indecency or something? Just thought this wouldn't be classified as a dumb law anyway.

2. It is considered an offense to enter the country with cigarettes

eh its not illegal. unless you enter with a few boxes of it, then you gotta pay taxes on it cos it would seem like you're smuggling it in for sale otherwise. a few packs for personal consumption is ok. Just declare it at customs.

3. Cigarettes are illegal at all public places

eh its not. people smoke everywhere in public. unless the place is somewhere like an air conditioned shopping mall. I think the emphasis is on air condition.

4. Homosexuals are not allowed to live in the country

eh they are allowed. If a guy declares homosexuality, he's just given some concessions when he has to do his NS (national service a form of conscription for all guys for 3 yrs) ie doing deskbound jobs only.

5. It is illegal to come within 50 meters of a pedestrian crossing marker on any street

eh I don't get this one. "come" meaning? sperm? I don't know about this one though.

the rest are I think true to the best of my knowledge. They don't really broadcast news of you littering anyway. Maybe the pioneer litterers were caught on tape and shown. Not nowadays anyway. About the gum, think they gonna do that in China too, would save a lot of money on cleaning up I guess.

:p :wink :clap

Thnx for the post and welcome on DumbLaws. I'm afraid I'm guilty of spreading some disinformation on laws in Singapore, since some of the laws mentioned you rebutted sound a little too familiar to me :wink

I want to get one thing clear from your post. You said: If a guy declares homosexuality, he's just given some concessions when he has to do his NS (national service a form of conscription for all guys for 3 yrs) ie doing deskbound jobs only. You mean to say that gay men are allowed to enter the army, but they are not allowed to fight in the army? And what about lesbians?

because singapore is a small country with a lack of manpower, we have a form of conscription called national service where every male citizen would spend 2 1/2 years of their lives in the army after their high school and before university regardless of their sexual orientation. In my opinion only, some concessions are given to homosexuals I believe so as to protect them ie I don't think they are allowed to stay in camps but have to stay at their own residences and they work 9-5 jobs ie clerical. Thats my opinion. I'm not sure about the official stance.

Please do take note that all my comments are related to when a guy is conscripted into army.

I dont know anything about the army's hiring policy about hiring full time front line combat troops though, so I cant comment about what you wrote since you seem to be writing in regards to full time troops rather than conscripts

As you said yourself, you referred to male conscripts? Does Singapore also have female conscripts or not? And how about full time troops? Do you know anything more about that?
