This shall be the sex ed thread!

Which contributes more to teen pregnancy and STDs, knowledge or ignorance of the consequences?

It never is the knowledge that is dangerous, it always is the use of the knowledge that is dangerous. It is not dangerous to know that there are condoms. It is not dangerous to know when girls/women can get pregnant. It is not dangerous to know about primary (?) and secondary sexual organs. It is not dangerous to know about ejaculation. It is not dangerous to know the difference between syphilis (?) and gonorrhoea. It is dangerous however to teach 7 year olds the best way to perform oral sex.

The three "R"s is the main thing that should be taught. The quality of teachers is questionable to begin with. Many of them don't know about sex yet themselves. Then when we allow them to teach sex ed, they are required to teach alternative (PC) sex – oral - gay and lesbion, etc. Not their job!

Teachers are continuously crying about the lack of funds for music, sports and co-educational body painting. With budget constraints considered, the more important thing is to teach them how to read, add and speak. Teach them the things necessary to get a job. Sex is not a requirement.

The three R's???

Teachers shouldn't teach about sex itself, although it is always helpful that for instance boys know what that white stuff is.
Teachers shouldn't teach sex (there are institutes and books for that), but they should teach the basics of biology. They should teach what menstruation and ovulation are, when girls/women can get pregnant, what STDs are, how STDs can be prevented, etc. Some people say that sex ed is a job for parents. There are two problems with this. First of all not all parents teach their children things like that. I think it is too important to leave it up to the parents, when there is no means of knowing what they exactly teach their children. Secondly not all parents know what they're talking about. Not all parents know the fine details of the human body in the nether regions. It's better to have "experts" teaching the children the basics of biology and anatomy.

What is the sex ed like where you live? What is being taught, how is it being taught, etc.?

They have 'taught' us the exact same things for seven years - clinical terms and the occasional (occasional meaning once every few years) good discussion.
