What should the legal age of consent (to sexual intercourse) be? And why?
(If the age of consent you had in mind is not on the list, please say so in a post, and specify which age it was you had in mind)

Thsi would really make up a dumb law since consent is no question of age.

How about considering the parents? As long as they are legally and financially responsible for their offspring they should have the final word. :smash

*rolls her eyes:rolleyes: *

It's the whole thing about individual differences isn't it? Some are more mature and ready than others so how can you put and age on it?

However, I believe that you need a line or else all hell will break loose. Yes there is a thing about how in some other cultures, children as young as 12 begin to produce offspring... but there is a time when a person is physically mature for safe sexual intercourse.

To be honest, I know many people who have had sex before they were 16 and such a restriction is so hard to police that people dont think it as a law...

But speaking from experience, I have never looked upon the age 16 law as a restriction. If I wanted to do it, I'd have done it without feeling like I'd broken the law. It is really just a guideline for people to look at. Studies have shown that most people did not have intercourse 'till they were 17. However, I dunno where it was from or if it is reliable information...

What I found strange was the alcohol age restriction is at 18/21 but they think that 16 year olds are responsible enough to have children.

Personally I think that having a child at that age will just kill the rest of you life. But that's just me... I guess there are people with only one goal and that is to have a nice family and kids. But often it is just a scape goat from work&education and naively think it's a scape goat from responsibility...

With sexual education provided at schools now, more and more people start to understand the depth and dangers of STD and consequences.

However, some believe that teaching them so much about sexual intercourse is like you are trying to encourage them. E.g. teaching them how to break into a car and how to drive it and expecting them not to...

Okay, here is the German law for it:

INtercourse with a person under 14 is illegal
INtercourse with a person between 14 and 16 is illiegal for anyone over 21
Everything else is legal (well okay, not absolutely everything of course)

In The Netherlands, sex with anyone under 12 is illegal, although I do not know whether it is actually enforced if the sex was consensual. (With consensual I specifically refer to children of 11, 12 years old who are way ahead of their age.)
Sex with someone between the ages of 12 and 16 is illegal only if the person files a lawsuit. This can lead to strange situations. A few years ago for instance, a man was sued by his ex-girlfriend. She sued him, because when they had sex, she was 15. During the trial however, it turned out that the sex was completely consensual. The girl had sued her ex-boyfriend to get back on him, after he broke up with her. I can't remember the result of the trial. But as you see, having sex with someone between the ages of 12 and 16 can put you in a position of being open to blackmail.
Sex with people over 16 is completely legal, unless ofcourse it is rape or other forms of forced sex.
The age of conditional consent is 12 here, the age of consent is 16.

..questions for thought-provoking diatribe from someone around here.. :lol ..

Since jewish boys become 'men' at the age of 13 after they are bar-mitzvah'd.. does that mean they can have sex now?

what about jewish girls?, i am not very in tune with the jewish faith, but girls are bar-mitzvah'd too right?.. only i think they call it sumthin else.. so once they are declared 'adult' by the jewish faith, is that the age of consent ??

in Africa, dont most of the tribes consider the age of 13 to be 'adult' after they go through a ceremonial rite of passage??.. would that be considered 'consent'.

In Utah, if i can believe what news shows like 60 Minutes spew out, girls are considered adults and given out in marriage at the age of 11 or 12.. considered old maids by the time they are 15. So their age of consent would be what.. 10??

[An overheard conversation at a Utah restaurant...]

"So... I hear you've been eyeing little Becky Smith?"

"Yeah, I plan to marry her."

"But she's only 10 years old!!"

"Yeah... but she's got body of an 8-year-old..."

:wink

I think the age of consent should be 16 because here in the UK it is legal for a 16 to smoke, play the lottery, have a full time paid ocupation etc etc if a 16 can do all those things legally why should a 16 have sex responicibly?

:clap
