From Private Eye (a British satirical magazine), October 4:

The Rev Jerry Falwell has already found culprits for the twin towers bombing: er, lesbians.

The Rev Falwell, a long-time friend of the Bush family whose backing ensured George Dubya won the Republican nomination for President, blamed the Sapphic sorority for the attack two days after the bombing. He said the "forces of secularism" had made God "lift the veil of protection" from America, causing the terrorist attack.

On Pat Robertson's influential American Christian programme, the 700 Club, Falwell claimed: "I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle... the American Civil Liberties Union, People for the American Way (a civil rights group), all of them who have helped secularise America... I point the finger in their face and say 'You helped this happen'."

(BTW: 'Sorority' means 'sisterhood', it's the feminine equivalent of 'fraternity' http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/smile.gif )

I think the Rev Falwell is talking complete garbage, and that, while I defend religious freedom, this kind of comment is utterly unhelpful and deeply insulting.

What do you think?

In a point the reverend isn't totally wrong. All the aspects he mentioned cared for a growing hatred of the muslims on the USA and the western world because it is hurting their religious basics. But of course we live in the western world with our values and may not care for what others think about us.

Fallwel's statement only serves a point I've made many times: radicals have no brain. To assert that 5,000+ people deserved to die because the US has legalised abortion, emancipated women, (at too late of a date albeit) and allows consenting adults to download porn from the Internet is just as assinine as statements from lefties who believe we deserved this to happen because the US would not ratify the Kyoto treaty.

Fallwell should be thankful that he lives in a nation that allows him to spout off his mouth on a television program rather than risking the firing squad. In short, I believe that he would feel rather comfortable amongst the Taliban. When can I make your reservations for Kabul, Jerry?

I agree, except the point that radicals have no brain. It would be easy if it was like this, but unfortunately they sometimes have a very high IQ. Otherwise the whole coordination on Sep 11 wouldn't have been possible.
I just want to point out that my last statement should not be understood in a way that I declare the attack as legitimate. The mass murder can never be excused, justified or explained.

No brain? How oculd someone with no brain coordinate such an attack!
Falwell should face a firing squad, IMO. . . http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/mad.gif

Indeed many radicals have quite a lot of technical ability-I just find that an individual who goes through life with a one track, my-way-or-the-highway world view is foolish.

Perhaps I should have said radicals have no heart? Given what I know now, that would be more technically correct.

That's a darn good site, Bi-blonde, thanks. I wish I could say it's amusing. I am so glad that that kind of religious leader has no sway over here - we'd laugh ourselves silly at him!

Jerry Falwell knows his audience. I don't think he really believes that crud anyway. An alarming percentage of those TV evangalists make tons of money getting all teary eyed and Godly on TV and then suddenly they're caught banging a prostitute in some seedy hotel room. The pious viewers just turn to the next fiery Praise Gawd televangelist. Makes 'em feel good about themselves.

Jimmy Swaggart's tears got quite enough publicity over here (that's quite a few years ago now), I laughed - but noticed with deep alarm the crowd's approval. One hypocrite I can deal with, but there was a whole big auditorium full of very gullible people...

I don't know much about televangelists (all I know is that I disapprove of televangelism), so forgive my probably stupid question. Wasn't Jimmy Swaggart the one who turned out to have an extramarital child?

I also dislike them (Teledudes). I can provide perspective from the otherside, as I was raised in a christian home. They are simply WRONG. The people who declare WTC was god's punishment are BS.
It annoy's me to no end how they preach this stuff and speak for all christians when it's their personal spin on things.
Same with those people who storm around with sign saying "God hates fags", when it states over and over in the bible that God loves everyone without exception.
(Although homosexuality is wrong according to scripture, it is the sin itself which god hates, not the person). Same with people who blow up abortion clinic's they're breaking the very law that they're preaching. Do not kill. These people are wackos plain and simple.

P-Meister: I'm not sure if Swaggart had an extramarital child, but he certainly had extramarital sex with a prostitute, paid for by those donations that televalgelists plead for. I think it was in the mid-1980's, but I'm not sure.

TV Guy: Of course the televangelists are theologically out, because they turn the issue into a party political one, hence, any excuse to attack their enemies. I don't mind that kimnd of thing so much from a politician - at least I have come to expect it - but from a preacher? Surely his role should be to comfort, not to point the finger? For the record, Falwell did apologise for his remarks about 9/11, but he did not issue a retraction.

Probably because he still believes it. We cant blame the guy for having an opinion, though it seems rediculous he thinks its true and he's allowed to express it....I dont think its fair to say that he should be put infront of a firing squad for using his freedom of speech?

Phreakmeister

Well, on one hand it is freedom of speech. But on the other hand, how far can we let freedom of speech go? When does using the freedom of speech turn into insulting?
Because what mr. Falwell did, was deliberately insulting an innocent part of the population..
