I HATE the new carseat law! As of January 1,2002 (around the due date of our little guy http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/smile.gif)they will be ENFORCING a new law! NOW a child has to be EITHER 6 years old or 60 pounds to NOT be in a car seat! I was like 50 lb's in 4th grade! This is bad, i want to move out of the country, im moving to Australia, or England, or..or...anywhere!!!
Ok logicaly thinking now *breather* I cant fit 3 carseats in the back of my car and my car is roomy, its a Toyota Camry LE and its roomy but 3 carseats? All of my kids will be in carseats! Right now it's Austen and then ofcourse the new baby will be in one and im going to have to buy one for Gibby now too? He is 5 and weighs about 49 to 50 lb's, he is rather tall for his age.Should I fatten him into a massive ball of fluff just so he doesnt have to sit in one?
I think the laws in this country are absolutly insane! What about ppl who have smaller cars, are we all going to have to go out and buy suv's? Not everyone can afford that.I CANT go out and buy an SUV!
I just think the law is overdoing things! Opinions or understanding anyone???

I remember when Mom didn't even belt us in (car seat? what's that?). When she came to a stopsign she would just hold out her arm across our chests.
You know what though? I always felt perfectly safe... Ah, the good ol' days!
But back on topic. You can blame all the idiots who drive their cars as if they were at Daytona and then crash horribly for this law. Seems to me that we Americans are not taking enough responsibility for our own actions and demand legislation to make up for that lack.
It's a sad state of affairs...

Guess we're supposed to raise little porkers. My g-daughter is 7 but very small, bet she doesn't weigh 50 lbs and my seat belts do swallow her, the shoulder belt anyway, the seat belt is adjustable, looks like that would be good enough. Is this new law for all the states? Haven't heard of this one. Anyway it's another stupid law. Don't they have some kind of harness you can somehow attach to your car seats. Don't have kids anymore so don't know what is all out there.
amr I still hold out my arm automatically when I stop cause that's what I used to do with my kids, course that wouldn't stop them from flying through the windshield if you had a collision.

Don't know if we have such laws over here. All I know is that kids below 12 have to sit in the back of the car. Concerning the baby seats it is probably the producer who tells how old the kids are allowed to be to sit safely in there. But to defend the law a little bit: the seat belt can cause heavy injuries to kids because they are made for people of an average size. For smaller persons they are taking pressure on wrong parts of the body.

I've had this rant before... On the subject of child safety in cars, I don't know if any of our readers ever do this or know anyone who does, but... I've seen more than once an adult passenger in a car with a child on his/her lap, and an ordinary seatbelt over the pair of them. If the car has a head-on collision, that adult is going to jump forwards and sandwich the child, or more likely just slice the child in two. If you ever see anyone doing this, please point out the risk. Maybe the child feels safe psychologically, but is actually in a lot more danger. Thank-you.

Actually Dippy, my father in his capacity as a police officer points this out many times to grandparents who often drive with the children in their laps, or as passengers. Often times they have no idea that the child is in danger.

I remember when a child car seat was something that hooked over the front bench seat and had a little steering wheel with a horn!

It makes me soo mad because we are the type that enforce seatbelt and car seat safety and i do not think a 50 lb. 5 year old needs to be in a car seat! Thats ridiculous in my opinion. Yes maybe it's even safer but it would also be even safer if we were all in carseats? Am i right?

once again I will comment that this just like seatbelts should never be allowed to become a law. it interferes with the natural order of things. people who are stupid won't take preventative measures and will die in crashes, thus removing such stupidity from the gene pool. same with drugs for that matter.

As I have told MANY people in my life, (ignore this if you're not in the US) if you don't like a law, there's only 1 sensible thing to do...WRITE YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS. (I wish I had a dime for every letter I've written to everyone from my local Alderman to my state Rep. and Senator to my Federal Rep. and Sen.!...$$$$$ http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/smile.gif ) I've gotten things passed before by doing that!
Better yet, draft up a Bill and send it in. It's NO WHERE near as hard as they make it sound-90-95% of all that fancy legal jargon isn't even found in Statute books (State or Federal)! Hey, anyone ever want to do so, and need help, I'd be perfectly willing to do so! (Now, is THAT proof that I'm trying to do something out here?) http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/smile.gif

On a slightly calmer note, they used to make these cloth padded things that would Velcro over the seatbelt and strap a small child in more securely. We had these in the backseat when I was four years old - screw car seats! I went with my neighbors to the beach to babysit for their 3 year old boy - he hated his car seat so much! I wanted to throw it(and him, for that matter) out the window!

Napoleon, you've been hanging out with Darwin, haven't you? I don't see any problem with a 50 pound kid with a lap belt in the middle of the car. The shoulder belt might not fit well, so we just use the lap belts for small kids. What really torques me is that with all this regulation, last I knew they still didn't have seat belts on school buses. What is the penalty for not having a kid in the proper car seat? Is there a grandfather clause?

We should have the kind of belts that go over your shoulders, kinda like the ones on roller coasters.
There's a car seat law here in NJ that says you have to be 6 yrs old or SEVENTY pounds to sit in a regular seat. Now this is ridiculous. I can think of a few sixth graders who weigh about seventy pounds!

One of the reasons there is a weight and height requirement for siting in the front seat is airbags. Cars now have passenger airbags which can kill a small child...

That's why kids sit in the back, not in the front. Also, I was 5" by the time I was ten years old, and the minimum age for the front seat was twelve.

It's wrong to tell others what to do. I'm sorry about your niece but that doesn't change the fact that you clearly believe you have some kind of right to tell me how to behave.
