Murderers should be killed in the same manner as their own victims, except in the case of a cannabal; bring on a hundred hungry rats.

And the punishment for not following this law would be? http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/smile.gif
I sometimes think they should be put to death in the same manner as the victim, but then who would carry it out. I hope when those responsible for this tragedy are caught die a very slow and painful death.

I agree with you Aclu! Definatly! The punishment is getting the exact same treatment done that you did to someone else! Right Aclu???
People are getting away with murder! (In the loosest possible term!) Their getting an electric chair for say torturing a young girl, it's sad!
Bin Laden should be blown into smitherenes!

Throw bin laden(he still doesn't deserve capital letters) and all the terrorists into a tall building and then blow it up with a remote controlled Boeing. Let him burn in hell!

NO aclu that would be too easy! Americans should line bin laden and all his followers in a big circle, tape firecrackers and cherry bombs to their unmentionables and we dance in a circle around them carrying our flag singing "How do you like me now" watching their manhood be blown to smitherines!!!!

I'm not kidding, let's start a petition.
1st Draft
We, the undersigned, move for legislation stating that a human being cruel enough to take the life of a fellow person must be subjected to their own cruelty.

Lately there has been a lot of talking about islam being a cruel and dangerous religion, which could not live side by side with christianity (The talk has been in Denmark anyway).
We in the western world build our societies on christianity. That should also go for our punishment system.
Christianity talks about forgiveness, not reveange.

And Islam means "Peace". There are members of both religions - often powerful members at that - who choose to ignore the basic tenets of their respective faiths.
Personally, I don't think a state's laws should be based on any religion in particular, although there is much of great value that can be learned from studying the scriptures of pretty much all major religions (and quite a few minor ones).
There are many reasons why we cannot make up our minds about capital punishment (here I mean that some places use CP, some don't. I'm sure all of us have made up our minds!). To return to Aclu's original proposal, there is that interesting story of a man who fell from a rooftop, he landed on another man. The man on whom he landed was killed, the faller survived. The widow sued the faller, demanding his life. The judge decided that that would be just - as long as the execution was in the same manner as the original killing. The widow was not too keen on jumping off a rooftop onto the faller! (Someone posted that story here somewhere, thanks and apologies, I've forgotten who.)
More seriously, there is a moral question at the heart of the debate. A killer is a no good guy, to be sure, but why should the state reduce itself to his moral level to achieve its aims? The question is: What is the function of the law and legal system, to carry out justice, or revenge, or retribution? Justice is the usual answer, and the one I favour. How about you?

That's very true SJax but Christianity also focuses on peoples weaknesses and sinfullness, which we sin all the time! It's ok for us to be veangefull if our hearts are broken over something sad, it's a natural feeling that God gave us and he understands that. We should forgive and forget but it's not always so easy to do so! http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/wink.gif

Jill, that's what I first thought, but there are millions of innocent people in Afghanistan, and most of the terrorists live here in the USA(half of them in NJ with me and Uncle Paulgro!)

There are people in that country just trying to survive like you and me. They have nothing to do with terrorism or this war. I don't have a problem in the world seeing the terrorist killed, but killing the whole country would be terrorism...

Bull$hit. The afghani people are completely innocent. The afghans have been living in war for the past 25 years. They deserve peace. They don't deserve this.
Afghanistan once was a wonderful country. The richest and most liberal country in central Asia. But when the Soviets came, it all went wrong. First there was a war between the Soviets and the US-supported rebels. After that, the western world just left Afghanistan. We didn't care fot the country anymore. We have just let it wear down in poverty.
Too bad it took September 11th to realize that...

Jesus pointed out what was wrong with that - He said that we should turn the other cheek, remember? "Eye for an eye" is Old Testament, while "Turn the other cheek" is New Testament, therefore has more to do with Christianity. Not that I go in for any of this... http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/wink.gif

what if AFTER torturing the murderer by the laws of hammarabi, eye for an eye....um.. yeah, turns out the person accused was actually innocent?? and i mean by that months, or years later FOUND innocent, or someone else was proved to be guilty for crime? any thoughts out there? should we feel bad for making a boo-boo?or just go ahead and torture the REAL CRIMINAL?

There are two ways to deal with the situation of an innocent suspect being tortured:
1) Stop torture (my favourite)
2) Torture the torturer

I agree with you Phreak. Whats that famous picture with the torturer being killed by the torturer.. death penalty? Rehabilitation everytime is my solution. I even work with a peadophile (is that how you spell)quite controversial. I don't agree with it of course. He is so like a child he never meant to hurt anyone, he is so mentally disturbed he really doesn't know what he is doin. If others (locally) found out they would probably want to harm him.
