Governor defends his remarks after backing Schaefer
ANNAPOLIS -- Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. rejected calls to apologize for his remarks last week describing multiculturalism as "crap" and "bunk."
Ehrlich defended his comments on talk radio as "common sense" and declined to apologize Tuesday.
"We celebrate our ethnicities quite appropriately," he said, noting that he was once named "German of the Year" for Maryland. But he said multiculturalism, which he defined as separating people into different groups, was wrong.
"In America we have a singular culture, common values and a common language," he said. "It's a common history, it's a common culture. ... We should not separate ourselves. This is a melting pot society. ... I think we need to get back to our roots, which is to celebrate the melting pot."
Screw Bush and kerry. Why dont we elect this guy or even the one he was defendding.

It's a common history, it's a common culture. ... We should not separate ourselves. This is a melting pot society
It's a melting pot society, but that doesn't mean all the colors should blend into a mass of colorlessness. "Melting pot" means a collection of differing groups making up the whole.
Ethnic cultures have always created niches for themselves in this country. Are you saying there shouldn't be Italian neighborhoods, Jewish neighborhoods, black neighborhoods, etc? Are you saying ethnic pride should be discouraged?
And what is the "common culture" from which ethnic groups isolate themselves? The fact is multiculturalism IS the common culture.

I say we're fine the way we are, culturally. It's people like you & the writer above that want to change things.

No real objective here but - I have always enjoyed visiting Chinatown in San Francisco. To me it is a chance to see another culture without having to travel abroad.
I am still looking for the best US locations for:
Little Africa
Little Germany
Little Italy
Don't have much interest in Little France or Little Mexico. :)

LOL. Very American! But you may want to visit Solvang in southern California: it's a kind of Little Denmark, IIRC. I liked it, though the day I was there it was so hot, people were scurrying from one bit of shade to the next. A more relaxed visit would probably have been even better.

I don't see how the left want to balcanize. In fact the left is all about touchy-feely inclusiveness, they want everyone to intermingle and love each other. Balcanization is about hostile division. :confused

I love the different cultures we have in this country. We are a melting pot, like a stew, all in together but separate pieces, not blended like baby food.

They fosters grouping and hostility towards those other than {your own kind". Basic social fact tig. If I dont want to say its ok for someone to cercumsize a fermal e because its brutal and dangerouse, I dont give a d@mm about their cultural diversity that says its ok.
