What in the world can we do with 5,000 corpses buried in an enormous pile of rubble in the middle of lower Manhattan?

Nothing much except to declare the site a mass grave.

Not a bad idea aclu but don't think not using 16 acres(that's how many acres the trade center took up) would be a good idea, but if they build back, I don't think I could work in there just for the simple reason there might be ashes or some body part under it.

It will take a long time, but when they're done everything will be cleaned up.....

Myself, I think they should rebuild. I suspect that's what the victims would have wanted. Best thing is to consult the relatives, tho'.

Make a big park out of it - plant grass, trees, flowers, a nice memorial which would also be a contrast from the rest of Wall Street

As so often except discussing about globalisation, I agree with dippy. There should be a new WTC (but maybe a nicer one with a modern security construction)

And the odds are that people would go to work in it, ogb?

Well I don't know about others but I just would not be comfortable working in it. I understand that each of those familes are going to get an urn of dirt from there though. I just don't think any amount of cleaning will get rid of all the ashes though. Maybe they won't build it so tall when they rebuild anyway.

Mark my words, no-one will go back to work at a site in which 2 airplanes killed five thousand people.

If they are going to rebuild it, it will at least last until 2005. Of course there would be people working in there, e.g. I would do it. You just have to care that it has a modern construction, which means no simple steal construction as the last one. In some countries it is even forbidden as steal melts in the heat (and that's why the WTC collapsed).

Actually, if they rebuild it will be around 80-90 stories high which is the most efficient size for a skyscraper.

I don't think anything could hold up as well as those two buildings did. I think they were extremely well built, many thousands were saved because they stood so long. The tremendous heat created by the plane fuel would have screwed anything,. How can you possible make something plane proof?

Who would work in them? If they are rebuilt they will be the biggest targets in the world. Nice sentiment, but not practical.

Actually, the WTC was designed to be plane proof. But during the years, bigger planes were developed. The least it couldn't handle anymore, were Boeing 737's. That would cause it to crumble. So had they used only slightly smaller planes, nothing would have happened, or nothing this severe.

(BTW, it was 2900 victims. Still an awful lot, but a lot less than the 6000 reported at first)

P-Meister, the WTC collapsed due to structural damage caused by fire from the fuel the planes carried, not the physical size of the planes themselves.

The Statue of Liberty represents freedom, and the WTC, America's ego.

Well here in NZ the very first reports stated up to 50,000 people could be involved, phew!

Half true. The WTC was designed to be able to withstand plane impacts. Just not impacts of this scale, by planes this big.
