I remember a few months back...
The taliban-led government in Afganistan ordered the destruction of ancient Buddha statues which caused an outcry throughout the world.
Now take a look at Saudi Arabia, one of out "allies". They have recently allowed for the destruction of an ancient fort in Mecca to make way for a new apartment complex, which is scheduled to be built by one of Bin Laden's estranged relatives. Other notable items the government has "okayed" was the conversion of a historical battleground into a parking lot, and the banning of Valentine's Day gifts saying it is a pagan ritual.
