View Full Version : Dodgeball
February 26th, 2002, 03:17 PM
The traditional schoolgame of dodgeball has recently come under attack (among all other things), and the impassioned and outspoken criticizers of the game have convinced 9 states to pass laws outlawing the game! (with a few more on the way...)
What do you guys think?

For anyone, like me, who doesn't know what Dodgeball is (it's not made it over the Atlantic, not into my school anyway. That was a LONG time ago, though http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/frown.gif) this site tells you all about it. I posted abouut this back in june Here (http://:http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000089.html)
Sorry, been a while and I forget the ubb code but theres the thread.
Also in recent history, I've had to change keyboards and since I have to look at the keys to type, I miss when the keys make multiple letters. I press the A key once and end up looking like aaaaaa sometimes.
thats a Packard keyboard for ya I guess
EDIT:
Went back and tried it so maybe this works
heh
2nd Edit: apparently threads in the archives are not viable links. Anyway, go to the archives and look in june last year. I started the thread back then

Let's see.....
They claim that it "isn't fair because the more athletic kids always win" and it can be "violent".
Personally, I say let the kids get used to competition as they will be with it for the rest of their lives and as for the violence, how will a little ball hurt too much? It's not like they are playing dogeball with big rocks, they are light, inflatable balls for cryin' out loud....

Dodgeball is a pretty universal game. Athletic kids are naturally good at it
"Nerds" are good at dodging
Lots of girls can throw the ball really hard
Smaller kids are more agile in the little circle
Fun for everyone! I love dodgeball!

Maybe they will eliminate all tests and homework in school too because the smarter kids are better at it and it might make the others feel bad?

I suggest they remove all track and field events from the Olympic games, because the more athletic people always win.

I never was very good at Dodgeball. I prefered to spend my time playing & practicing the more worthwhile sports, like VOLLEYBALL. However, I did play Dodgeball on occasion, mainly when there was work to avoid (I went to a non-traditional highschool where you got to choose whether or not you worked on work in your free time). Didn't take me long to realize I'm not much good at dodging. So I decided that, instead of dodging, I would be the official 'protector' of the best players on my team.
The end results of that? I got hit right in the middle of the chest with a ball thrown by a member of the softball team as soon as one of the games started because he'd caught on to what I was doing. I got the wind knocked out of me, the game got called, & one of the guys asked if I was going to be able to have children later in life. (Everyone laughed at that one, but it took him a while to realize why it was funny.)
Oh, & the game was temporarily banned in my school shortly after that.

What's next, get rid of the spelling bees so the illiterate kids feel good about themselves? Geez, what happened to increasing self-esteem by encouraging achievement? That idea seems to have gone the way of ull service gas stations...

This topic reminds me of a Kurt Vonnegut story. Everyone was required to be equal, which meant that everything was brought down to the lowest level and they "handicapped" those who were above average. The physically strong had to carry weights around, the beautiful had to wear masks, and the intelligent had a special earpieces that broadcast loud noises every 20 seconds or so.
Seems to me like this is where political correctness wants to lead us.

Outlawing dodgeball is about as stupid as a story I heard on the radio. A family was having a picnic in the park. They were playing musical chairs around a picnic table. They thought this was a good idea because, since no chairs were removed, nobody would lose. A couple of hours passed before they realized how stupid they looked.
