View Full Version : Name of the new Pope

There have already been many speculations over who will be elected as the next pope. But it is unlikely that that person will reign under his own name (so far, only Adrian VI and Marcellus II have kept their own name). What is your uninformed guess of under what name the new pope will govern?

Most of the popes throughout history took the name of the pope preceding them to honor them. Especially in the 20th century, St Pius X, Pius XI and Pius XII. John Paul II was the pope after John Paul I died.
It could be John Paul III, I'll make a wager on that name.

I think it's very well possible that the next pope will choose another name, so that the name John Paul will remain associated with Karol Wojtyla. If the next pope is an Italian, he might choose the name Pius XIII, in tribute to Padre Pio (http://www.padrepio.it).

I don't keep up with what the Catholics do to really know, but if it's an Italian they choose then I would guess he would probably take some name other than John Paul

I'm hoping they'll choose the Belgian cardinal Godfried Danneels. If they want a nice story for the history books, they might go for the French cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger (the former archbishop of Paris), who is a converted jew.

Talk now is they might choose that African one. Can't remember his name.

You're talking about Cardinal Arinze, who is being mentioned in the press as one of the favourites. I'm not so sure though. I kinda agree with Rev. Richard P. McBrien, theology professor at the University of Notre Dame, who told the Boston Herald: "We're not going to have a black pope. ... The church won't make two bold moves in a row."

I don't think they will either The church won't make two bold moves in a row." What is the other bold move? Electing a polish pope?

Electing a young (at age 58 the youngest in 132 years), non-Italian (the first in 455 years), Slavic (the very first) pope from a communist country.

Pope Greenspan. They only care about money, extortion, power, manipulation, and sex anyway.
Funny how the Italian church turns otherwise normal, rational people into zombie-like followers. Cult....like I always said, a cult....
Haysuus (Jesus) was really on to something when he figured out that most humans were stupid enough to buy into this salvation crap. I guess weak minds need something to believe in and someone to tell them what to do.

Well Dave if there is no salvation the people that believe in it are no worse off than you are but if there is salvation they will be a lot better off than you. So what do they have to lose...

New Pope
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany, a hard-line guardian of conservative doctrine, was elected the new pope Tuesday evening in the first conclave of the new millennium. He chose the name Pope Benedict XVI and called himself “a simple, humble worker.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>..
The whole word is seeing the good in being a conservative. Maybe there is hope if we can keep the liberals in check until they fall apart...

Impeccable timing, elect a former Hitler Youth on Hitler's birthday.
A lot of Catholics are offended by this choice. It's not good at all.

The "Hitler youth" information is pretty well known among the Catholics and Europeans. Ratzinger mentioned it in his bio and it's on the Wikipedia entry about him. A lot of Catholics called him Cardinal Panzer and were really hoping he wouldn't gain the papacy. His stint (it was mandatory for a teenager at that time in Germany to join the Hitler Jugend) probably shaped his conservative ideals. You didn't have to join the hitler youth but you became a pariah if you didn't join.
After John Paul II made amends to the Jews, this is most certainly a step back.

I will check all further polls and put a cut off date for voting from now on.
From the news reports I haven't heard any catholics not in favor of this new one. Some concern is over his age though. He's 78

I don’t normally pass on political statements, but I got this from a good friend and I thought it was interesting....
As I understand it, Ratzinger was not the Cardinals first choice. That was, interestingly, Cardinal Hans Grapje.
Grapje was raised in a Catholic school in The Hague and, as a young man, aspired to become a priest, but was drafted into the Army during WWII and spent two years co-piloting B17s until his aircraft was shot down in 1943 and he lost his left arm. Captain Grapje spent the rest of the war as a chaplain, giving spiritual aid to soldiers, both
Allied and enemy.
After the war, he became a priest, serving as a missionary in Africa, piloting his own plane (in spite of his handicap) to villages across the continent. In 1997, Father Grapje was serving in Zimbabwe when an explosion in a silver mine caused a cave-in. Archbishop Grapje went down into the mine to administer last rights to those too severely injured to move. Another shaft collapsed, and he was buried for three days, suffering multiple injuries, including the loss of his right eye. The high silver content in the mine's air gave him purpura, a life-long condition characterized by purplish skin blotches.
Although Cardinal Grapje devoted his life to the service of God as a scholar, mentor, and holy man, church leaders felt that he should never ascend to the Papacy. They felt that the Church would never accept a one-eyed, one-armed, flying purple Papal leader.
[Sorry... I just couldn't resist it...] :o :wink :lol :lol
