From today's Wisconsin State Journal mailbag:

MADISON IS A COMMUNITY THAT CARES FOR ITS DRUG DEALERS
In regard to Madison Mayor Sue Bauman's veto of the drug loitering law: I for one am glad that we are a community that cares for its drug dealers. We should always strive for diversity and fairness in the way that we treat our citizens. Drug dealers are people, too.
What we should do is have some city-subsidized training for white drug dealers. When we finally have some equality within our drug dealers, then and only then should we bring back the loitering law.
Thanks to Mayor Bauman and Ald. Mike Verveer, for without them the dealers would have no voice.

You need to throw out most of your elected officials and find some new ones...

We do that every election, and it doesn't help. This is political correctness run amuk. The only vices that will not be legalized or decriminalized are those of the white male. Now who is a victim of discrimination?

First of all we don't do that every election that's the problem. We vote for who ever offers the biggest tax cut and then wonder why everybody is laid off when there's isn't any money in the state budget left. If people vote with their heads instead of their wallets we might get change in the laws...

That is word for word from the newspaper "Mailbag" column. I'm sure that the writer was being facetious. The "anti-loitering" law has been a hot topic for debate here in Madison. Mayor Bauman vetoed it because she felt it was being used to discriminate against black youths in poor neighborhoods. Cops and most residents supported it because it's been used to disperse open-air drug activity. It was on the books for two years with a sunset clause, which means it expireds unless renewed. The mayor did not renew it, so now we do not have an "anti-loitering" law.
I don't know where I stand on the issue. I don't want cops deciding whether or not people have a "legitimate reason" to be out in public, but then I certainly don't want a bunch of miscreants loitering in front of my house either. Maybe I'll move back to Sauk County and sit on the front porch with a shotgun on my knees, telling strangers to "G'wan now, git!"

well i guess i agree with that i mean i don't think cops should decide whos breaking the law because they stand around but like you i don't want 10 people hanging out in the front yard selling drugs or whatever they are doing huh
