Man locks himself in trunk, on purpose
He sought to cover up theft at work, cops say.
What began with high drama in a Novi parking lot -- screams for help from inside a locked trunk Tuesday and a man's gasped tale of a five-day ordeal in captivity -- ended with the self-proclaimed victim in police custody and authorities considering felony criminal charges against him.
Novi police said the purported victim, whose name was not released pending charges, admitted staging the incident after taking about $6,000 last week from a gas station where he is an assistant manager. The money, police said, was spent on a gambling spree.
Although the man said he was locked in his car's trunk for five days, Novi Detective Ron Roy persuaded him Tuesday afternoon to admit that he had spent only minutes there, said Sgt. David Malloy.
According to police, the incident began about noon Tuesday when the man apparently parked in the employee lot of General Filters Inc., hopped in his trunk and closed the lid.
Then he started to yell.
Becky Chambers, a freight traffic manager at the Novi factory on Grand River, and the company's tree trimmer reported hearing screams from a car trunk.
Chambers said she spoke to the man through the trunk's lid.
"He sounded weak," she said. "After the police got there, they said he told them he'd been in there since Thursday."
But Chambers said the car had been in the lot for only six minutes before cries were heard.
The man was supposed to deposit gas station receipts last week, investigators said. On Monday, owners of the Speedway at Haggerty and 8 Mile discovered the deposit was never made. When their assistant manager could not be reached, they filed a police report, Malloy said.
"He admitted that the robbery and kidnapping and being locked in the trunk were all a lie," Malloy said.
