Still, what do you think will happen if I take my wife to the steps of the courthouse and beat her. I'd get the attention of a few cops real quick. And I don't think that quoting the law that allows me to beat my wife will get me out of trouble.

Let's not even mention this is a major case of divorce. After all, this is taking place in public and there will be a lot of witnesses. In theory, in a well going union, divorce is supposed to be considered worse than death. Of course, if I consider beating my wife an option, it might not be a "well going union".

Still consider I might even get filmed and shown on TV. Reputation ruined for sure for quite a long time (unless I move to the middle east or in asia).

Even though the government might be dumb, the people still have common sense (let's hope so, at least). So it's safe to assume that such a law will not be enforced.

But why didn't anyone think about revoking such laws...

I don't know what laws you refer to. Can wives beat husbands? Can parents beat kids? Do this here and you're off to jail for the night under mandatory arrest for a domestic call. Where it goes from there depends on charges being filed. Helps keep the peace but I suppose results in a lot of unreported domestic incidents to keep the abusing idiot out of the slammer.

Yeah in chester(England) you can hang a welshman at midnight still. Although tempted to do it sometimes i think the police would take no notice. don't you?

its a law that hasn't been taken out of the old law books...i'm sure that if someone was to beat their wife now in alabama..they'd be treated like !%!%!%!%..don't you remember in history though..the law about the stick as thick as the length of a width of a thumb...that used to be an enforced law back when women were treated like children...

These kind of laws have been around for a looong time. Look in the Bible, numerous references to this. Well, since the Bible has so much information, you can find sections condoning (or condemming) almost anything.

Here in Los Angeles, it's illegal for a man to beat his wife with a strap wider than 2 inches without her consent. What wife is actually gonna say, "oh go ahead, beat me"?!!

Welcomeluvunicorns & julie http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/smile.gif

The law finally got changed around here and now the law will throw you in jail before you know it if you even think about hitting your spouse. Actually they take it to extreams now. My sister and her husband were verbally arguing, no punches, in their front yard and the law hauled them both to jail for domestic volence.

I think that's why alot of laws are left in the books. First they're old laws that no judge would follow and second when a law is changed to day, it goes from one extream to the other. We all know you can't beat your wife and get away with it, law or no law! The new child abuse laws have gotten way out of hand. We needed these laws, but again they went to extreams when they were made!

Boy that's the truth. Now if you go to punish your child they threaten you with calling HRS. My daughter pulled this on me when she was young and I hadn't laid a hand on her yet. I told her when I got through with her then she'd have a reason to call them. Needless to say she shut up.

Years ago a buddy of mine (total !%!%!%!%!%cat)used to like to drink and his wife hated it. He'd come home drunk and pass out on the couch. She'd get pissed off and call the cops, claiming he abused her. They'd show up and under our city's mandatory arrest policy for domestic calls would haul him away - he was drunk, she wasn't, so they'd take her word for it. Finally they caught on and told her to quit doing this. The next time she called the cops they hauled HER away for falsly reporting a crime. They've since divorced and I've lost track of both of them.

I'm not saying that the actions the Cops took were wrong. It's just that when Tom (my buddy) spent his night(s)in jail he was innocent of beating his wife. He stumbled home and tried to sleep on the couch. I guess my point is that the best intentioned laws can be woefully abused.

KIki, if you think the government is wrong try and make changes when you're old enough. We did it in our time, you and your friends can do it when your time comes!!

No point in getting irate over wife-beating specifically. I thought the whole point of this site was to show ridiculous laws. I mean it’s perfectly legal to kill a Welsh or Scotsman in England because they became a thorn in the side of the conquering English. I read the other day that some pope had tried to outlaw the crossbow as it was inhumane.
What this meant was that it was inhumane to Knights as it was easier to kill them.

Laws were made by the wealthy, the bigots and the religious tossers initially. So if they felt like giving ‘er-indoors a Gazzering, then why not make up a law to say it’s OK? The same goes on today.

Well, there are people who are "into" bondage, sado-masochism, dominance and submission, etc etc etc. A quick look at the book _S&M 101_ could tell you possibly more than you want to know about such things. This is probably why they have the exception for wives (or husbands) who explicitely consent. (And the bondage subculture has developed the concept of consent a lot farther than the "vanilla" culture.)

I used to wear this T-shirt that said "Whip me, Beat me, I'm Bizarre" on it. I finally quit wearing it on stage because all these weird girls kept hitting on me.

Oh nevermind. Bad joke. http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Are they crazy? This law is still enforced? Well, you can bet that it was a group of men who came up with such a law. Where's it written that women can beat the hell out of their husbands, which by the way is exactly what will happen to mine if he gets the big bright idea to do that to me (law or no law). That's the biggest crock I've ever heard. And they wonder where all the violence comes from. Give me a break!!!!!

Sexism and legislation go hand in hand, or used to, back in the bad ol' days. There's still countries where patriarchy (polite word for "chauvanism") rules. Scary.

Hello Serendipity- Greetings all. Personally, I reckon you'd be hard pressed to name a European 'settlement' that isn't a patriarchy.

Just wanted ta point out that theres a big difference between being spanked and being bashed

Thing to keep in mind here is that it's LEGAL to beat your wife with a strap narrower than 2 inches- without her consent!
