What's with those "Do not remove under penalty of law" tags on pillows, matresses, rugs, etc? Why not on computers and can openers and bowling balls?

A former furniture salesman actually let me in on this secret. The real meaning of the tag is that the furniture is not used...

I had a neighbour who thought you couldn't take those tags off even after you owned the merchandise... it was too funny. :P

So how do we know that computers, can openers, and bowling balls aren't used since they don't come with tags?

Because bedding/rugs have the potental to spread lice/mites/flees or disease (and are almost impossible to sterilize), a retailer cannot legally resell these items. As CBranski said, the tags signify that the item is new, therefore not infested.
Bowling balls, and computers, and can openers are cleanable, therefore no consumer warning is needed.

Hmm. I'll admit I've never purchased a flea-infested bowling ball. Perhaps they should put those tags on clothing. How do I know my new bloomers aren't contaminated with vermin from some prior owner who returned them for refund because they kept riding up?

The best thing to do for that is before you wear any brand new clothes always wash them first because we really dont know who's tried them on and many items of clothing can carry infectuous diseases! Especially undergarments, obviously! http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/redface.gif
But even if there in a sealed bag, those bags are simply re-sealed and people actually take undergarments home, try them on (wear them) and if they dont fit they bring them back to the store and most department stores will accept the return and just re-seal the bag!
Sad but true!

In research for commercial crime I came across an article that states that the tag on bedding materials is legally required so that the consumer can be assure of what the item is made of. It would seem from my research that some manufacturers were lieing about what their bedding was made of.

But how does leaving the tag on guarantee that the mattress (or whatever) hasn't been used? Maybe the person who used it previously left the tag on...
