View Full Version : Squirell Worrying

Forgive me for being pathetically naive, but what exactly is "worrying a squirell?" I've seen several state and city laws prohibiting this.
I've fed squirells and shot at them too, but now I'm concered that I've been making them nervous! http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/smile.gif

It's just that - making them nervous. Over here (UK) we have laws about sheep worrying, any dog not on a leash in a sheep field can be shot by the farmer, for worrying the sheep. At lambing time such worrying can have serious consequences. So I presume squirrel worrying is the same thing for squirrels, making then nervous in their own homes. You shoot gray squirrels? If so, get a few for me - they were brought over here a couple of centuries ago and have usurped the forests from the population of native Red Squirrels, a much more attractive beast.

LOL, I don't know how nervous they are but we have zillions of squirells here(just ugly brown ones, nothing like dippy's beautifull red squirells from whereever, I never even heard of a red squirrell http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif ) But they all end up on tires anyways, they get run over all the time so I don't know that there nervous!I know they might be nervous when they see that semi heading straight toward them, I would be nervous too http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/wink.gif

Thanx for the info, Serendipity.
I don't know about the ones in the UK, but the Northern Wisconsin red squirrels (and chipmunks too) are nothing more than invasive tree-rats: they've been known to chew holes in wood siding and shingles! They also eat the begunias, bird seed, and sweet corn--among other destructive behavior. http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/eek.gif
Of course, this is in the middle of a rural area (300+ wooded acres) and there are hundreds of the little buggers running around.

We have the same problem in Northern NJ. If they get in your house they chew on electrical wires. Houses have actually burnt down because of this. If they were gone tomorrow, no one would miss them here!

Same here. One got in, of all places a CPA's office in the attic and chewed some wires and started a fire. Course the squirel got fried and fortunatly there wasn't much damage. Think I have my house squirel proof because I know how they are. As bad as rats.

SD, were the grays introduced for a reason?
Don't worry, I shoot enough squirrels for the both of us. There's 4 huge pecan trees in my yard and a 500 acre pecan grove behind my house, I'm ankle deep in them. They are excellent target practice http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/smile.gif

A friend of mine lives near the little local zoo in Baraboo. He had a chipmonk problem; they were tunneling all over in his yard. He started shooting them with a BB gun and feeding them to the Great Horned Owl at the zoo. One morning he went to the zoo with a couple chipmonks in a paper bag and there were two raptor experts from UW Madison examining the owl, trying to figure out why he was getting bloated and was off his feed!

I think it was the Duke of Bedford who brought them over to put in his menagerie. They escaped and took over the country, squirrel-wise, but they're not regarded as a major pest. You can shoot the grays (providing you're one of the few folks who's allowed to have a gun; gamekeepers, etc) if you can be bothered, but the native reds are a protected species. I was in the woods out the back of a farm I used to live on and a red squirrel came running along the ground straight towards me. He didn't change course at all, just climbed up a tree about 20 feet away, up through several other trees, over and down the other side. Completely charming. We have deer too, but don't go shooting them! Wildlife is so threatened here that we need protection orders on many species.

The reason we do shoot deer here is over population. They tried sterilazation, but it didn't work. Too many deer. Relocation is impossible because no other state wants them. So the hunt goes on, but still doesn't make a dent in the population. Driving at night around here is not a fun thing when a deer jumps out and destroys your car.

In my neck of the woods, it's the red squirrels that are the pests, you almost never see a gray. Must be a regional thing, because I never saw any reds when I lived up north. At dad's house there was 2 albinos running around, they were really cool looking.
I couldn't even imagine not being able to go hunting! The memories of hunting with my dad are priceless, and I'm sure my son will view our memories in the same way.

WELCOME Jeff.....That problem is getting bad again, just heard on the news.
Haven't seen red squirrels around here. We have the fox squirrels(their huge and pretty) and a million of the grey squirrels. They get all the acorns they want and share about half the pecans with me. http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

No, but the farmers could use some. Here (UK) we owned up to having widespread BSE (Mad Cow disease, Bovine Spongiform Encephaloppidoppisloppi) early on, it's caused seemingly by using feedstuffs which contain dead cows, sheep, etc. Pretty obvious really that you don't feed an exclusively herbivorous animal dried meat, but there was probably a profit in it for the feedstuff manufacturers. Now it's hit France and Germany, who were in denial about it, and the Euro beef trade is up the creek sans paddle. If it turns out that eating BSE-infected meat causes CJD (BSE variant disease which affects humans), then all hell will break loose, lawsuit-wise. Not a thing I'd compare with a worried squirrel! But then I'm not a squirrel.

The deer jumping in front of cars is a pretty serious problem here in Wisconsin, it certainly keeps a lot of body shops busy. (But the state's DNR joyfully reminds motorists that if a deer runs in front of their vehicle and gets hit, the owner of the vehicle gets to have the deer!)
Squirrels truly are pests. Here in the city at least they have been known to chew through electrical and telephone lines. but this one squirrel episode has to take the cake: an upstairs neighbor of mine is the owner of a 1998 cherry red Camaro Z-28 which he keeps garaged in the winter because the city of Milwaukee salts their streets more than McDonald's salts their fries. At any rate, last April he goes out to try to start his Camaro. No luck, plus there is a wretched smell coming from under the hood.
The local Chevy dealer found that a squirrel had made its way under the hood of the car and made a meal out of one of the hoses. The squirrel then crawled into the intake manifold, got stuck, and died.
I hope his warranty covered him at least...

Here if we hit and kill the deer we can't take it. All you get is a wreaked car. Mean while the deer may lay on the road for a week before the game warden picks it up. This state has a lot of strange laws like that.
I've heard of cat's getting under the hood in the winter and guess what happens when you start your car?? http://www.dumblaws.com/ubb/frown.gif

Oh I've had that happen. Fortunatley the cat survived.
The law here in Florida used to be like that you couldn't take the deer, but now you can. Hell yeah the sucker messed up your car the least you should be able to do is eat it. I've almost hit several. Lots of deer around here.
